Subject: Pegasus Mail Information (long)
In Info-Mac Digest V11 #191, Achim Voermanek asks about Peagasus. Here is a
posting from the author. At present, Pegasus for the Mac requires a Novell
Netware server. Apparently a future version will not.

Pegasus Mail and Mercury can be obtained as follows:
* Via anonymous FTP on the Internet - from:

tyr.let.rug.nl, in pub/pmail
(These are my officially supported sites, although other
FTP sites also carry PMail including wuarchive.wustl.edu).

In the "NOVUSER" library forum. To get to NOVUSER, type "GO
NOVUSER" at any CIS "!" prompt. After entering the forum, choose
"Library" from the menu, or type "lib" to get to the library
files. Search for the keywords "David" "Harris" or "Pegasus" to
find the most recent files.

Pegasus Mail, Box 5451, Dunedin, New Zealand.
Overview
-=-=-=-=
Pegasus Mail is an electronic mail system for PCs and
Macintoshes connected to Novell NetWare Local Area Networks. It
is full-featured, easy to install and maintain, and best of
all, it is completely free - you can use it on as many servers
and PCs as you wish without any charge or obligation. It has
its own transport agent which can deliver between servers
without gateways, has full support for SMTP mail via either the
Clarkson Charon SMTP gateway or my own Mercury Mail Transport
System, and has full native support for NetWare SMF transports
such as NetWare MHS and NetWare Global MHS. All standard mailer
features are present, and a number of enhancements. Here is a
partial list:
* CC, BCC, Copy-to-self, Reply-to fields supported.
* Message encryption using a very secure algorithm
* up to 64 attachments per message (attachments to the
Internet are automatically uuencoded/uudecoded).
* Comprehensive editor with spelling checker (60,000 words)
* Minimal installation (copy two files to the server), and
no maintenance (uses the NetWare Bindery for userids, and
the SYS:MAIL directory structure for mailboxes), unless you
are using NetWare SMF transports.
* Newmail filtering rules - automate new mail processing.
* Delivery and proof-of-reading confirmation supported.
* Extensive supervisor controls on system features
* Direct access to user lists from the NetWare Bindery,
NetWare MHS NETDIR.TAB file, and SMF-71 extract file.
* Extensive address book features with aliasing.
* Extremely user-configurable
* User-defined gateways - design your own mail transport
and teach Pmail how to use it.
* Keystroke macros
* Autoforwarding (except for NetWare MHS)
* Save messages in progress for later retrieval
* PostScript support, and printing direct to NetWare queues
* Extremely comprehensive context-sensitive online help.
... and a raft of other features and capabilities. Despite its
range of features, most users say they find Pegasus Mail very
easy to use.
Note: at present, the Mac version of Pegasus Mail requires a
connection to a NetWare server to run - it cannot run over plain
Appletalk. The next version of PMail/Mac will support TCP/IP
protocols if you have MacTCP or LAN Workplace for Macintosh and
will no longer require the NetWare connection.

Mercury is a mail transport system which provides comprehensive
SMTP mail services for TCP/IP networks. It runs as a set of NLMs
on NetWare 3.11 file servers using the standard NetWare TCP/IP
transport services provided with NetWare. Mercury provides the
following capabilities:
* Transparent support for Internet/RFC822 electronic mail using
Pegasus Mail and compliant systems; users can simply send mail
directly to any Internet-format address without worrying about
gateways, unusual address formats or other complications.
* Full RFC821/822/1123 compliance, with support for some RFC1425
(Extended SMTP) extensions.
* Full POP3 (RFC1225) server built-in
* Comprehensive mail server provides file transfer, distribution
list management and user lookup and verification services.
* Powerful distribution lists with support for list moderation,
automatic subscription and unsubscription, review and more.
* Very low memory and load overheads for the server.
* Relatively simple installation.
* Automatic reply feature - allows replies to be sent in response
to incoming mail (very similar to the Unix "vacation" program).
* Comprehensive support for aliasing.
Users Group
-=-=-=-=-=-
A users group for Pegasus Mail operates via e-mail. You can
subscribe to the group by sending a message to:
Internet: listserv@ua1vm.ua.edu
Compuserve: >internet:listserv@ua1vm.ua.edu
with a message body which says
"subscribe PMAIL Firstname Lastname"
Discussion, questions, answers and other general traffic should
be sent to:
Internet: pmail@ua1vm.ua.edu
Compuserve: >internet:pmail@ua1vm.ua.edu
The Pmail users group is operated by James Ford and the
University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, who have my lasting thanks
and appreciation for the amount of work they do running it.
Manuals
-=-=-=-
Pegasus Mail is free software, and is provided with enough
documentation and online help to be easily usable, but no
formal manual is provided.
In order to support the costs of hardware and software involved
in developing Pmail, I sell printed manuals. There is no
obligation to purchase manuals - none whatsoever. Purchasing
manuals does, however, help me in my work and also gives you a
tangible asset for your money. The manual is provided loose-leaf
in a protective folder, ready for copying. The quality of the
manual is high. Please DO NOT feel obligated to purchase manuals
- money is much less important to me than having people use and
enjoy Pegasus Mail.
I sell manuals in three ways:
* 5-user manuals: you get one printed manual with a license to
make up to 5 further copies. This costs US$125 (US$150 for
WinPMail).
* Site-licensed manuals: you get one printed manual with a license
to make as many copies as you wish for one site. One site is
defined as the extent of any organization in any one city or
town, so if you have two branches in the same town, one site
license will cover both of them. As well as the manual, site
licensees get a diskette with RTF and ASCII versions of the
manual. Site licenses cost US$275 (US$325 for WinPMail).
* One year update license: this is a site license with automatic
updates: any time there is a new release of the software or
manual up to one year from the date of the license, it will be
automatically mailed to you at no further cost. Update licenses
cover all versions of Pegasus Mail, even those which do not exist
at the time of purchase. Update licenses cost US$1000, and can
be renewed each year for US$250.
Any type of manual can be upgraded to the next level for the
current difference in cost between the two levels.
To order a Pegasus Mail Manual license, please print and fill
out the order form supplied with the Pmail distribution as
ORDER.FRM, then send it with your cheque or purchase order to:
Pegasus Mail, c/- David Harris,
P.O. Box 5451,
Dunedin, New Zealand. (or Fax +64 3 453 6612)
Purchase orders are accepted from any educational or charitable
institution or government department, and from companies with a
paid up capital in excess of $30,000.
Payment must be made in US dollars, drawn on a US bank. There
is usually a delay of around 2-3 weeks before a manual can be
sent out, and I reserve the right to hold your order if a new
release is pending (so you can get the new release).
PLEASE, PLEASE! Remember to enclose the order form: I'm not
psychic, and I can't guess at delivery addresses from a cheque
alone...
Contacting Pegasus Mail's Author

You can contact the author of Pegasus Mail in the following ways:

* By phone (least preferred of all)
+64 3 453 6880. PLEASE NOTE! New Zealand is GMT+1200 - this
